Duomo - Milan’s Largest Cathedral

The Milan Cathedral (Duomo), constructed over six centuries, is an architectural marvel that should not be missed on a trip to Milan. As the largest church in Italy, it definitely possesses a grandeur that that dazzled and amazed me.

Although the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Basilica may be more renowned, the Duomo is larger in size. In fact, it’s the third largest church in Europe, and the fourth in the world.

The architecture is phenomenal. It’s beguiling to imagine how something so magnificent begun construction in the 14th century. It is also possible to walk along the roof of the cathedral, which offers spectacular panoramic views of the city.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Right next to the Duomo is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

This 19th century galleria (named after the first King of Italy) houses high-end brands (Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada) and upscale restaurants. Even if you don’t plan on buying anything (I sure didn't…) it is worth entering the arcade to see the architecture, designed by architecte Giuseppe Mengoni.

Tourists can partake in a fun tradition inside the arcade: if you spin on your heel three times on the testicles of the bull on the mosaic of the Turin Coat of Arms, you will be rewarded with good luck (and a guaranteed return to Milan).

Who knows if it works - all I’ll say is that I did it as a child, and I returned to Milan.

Make of that what you will…

Maio Ristorante

If you want to grab yourself a quick bite, an aperitif, or a coffee while stile being able to see the Duomo, pop to Maio Restaurant, located on the seventh floor of La Rinascente department store.

While not the most outstanding restaurant I’ve ever been to in terms of food/ coffee, the view certainly makes up for it to me. If ambiance is something important to you, this may be a nice choice to still enjoy the Duomo’s grand stature while satisfying your hunger.

Shoutout to the yummy olives and cheese provided. I’m such a sucker for olives and cheese, yeeesh…
