DURDLE DOOR - Natural Limestone Arch on the Jurassic Coast (Day Trip in Dorset)

Durdle Door

On England’s southern end, there lies a magnificent feat of nature known as Durdle Door in Dorset (what a tongue-twister that sentence was)!

This natural limestone arch provides both awe and shade to visitors who visit the structure on the Jurassic Coast. I don’t often use the word “breathtaking”, but I think it’s quite appropriate in this case.

The arch overlooks a pebbled stretch of beach. You are allowed to swim in the water, and there were about 40-50 people swimming on the day I visited. However, I did personally find it quite chilly despite visiting during the summertime, so do bring a warm towel if you plan on diving in.

(Please don’t judge me for being in jeans. I didn’t plan on swimming, but felt compelled to jump in - clearly, my whims got the best of me a̶s̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶y̶ ̶o̶f̶t̶e̶n̶ ̶d̶o̶).

As for accessibility, the beach is unfortunately only reachable via numerous steps. I am unsure if there is an alternate means to go down. If you are unable to descend the stairs, you can still view the structure and the surrounding area without too much difficulty.

There is also a parking lot nearby as well as some drink/ snack stands. Although visiting the arch itself is free, do take into consideration the price of parking, and possibility pack your own drinks and food if you wish to minimize costs.

East Lulworth

On your way towards or away from Durdle Door, it is nice to visit the village of East Lulworth. The thatched-roof cottages dating all the way back to the 17th century make it a very charming place to visit.

I almost felt like I had walked into a Midsomer Murder film set, haha! I had a lot of fun just strolling around.

Teh Weld Arms Pub

After a day-trip out to Durdle Door, the perfect end to your trip is a visit to East Lulworth’s The Weld Arms pub. This dog-friendly (yes!!!) establishment makes great fish and chips, and has enough beer options to keep you satisfied.
