7 Gems of... The 4ème Arrondissement in Paris

  1. Yummy & Guiltfree

While Yummy & Guiltfree may not seem tempting to some as it does specialize in gluten-free offerings, it’s definitely worth the hype for both gluten and non-gluten eaters as the quality of their waffles (or, as they call them, « gaufres gastronomie »).

Whether you’re coming in for a more substantial breakfast/ lunch or a sweet snack, Yummy & Guiltfree cooks up both sweet & savoury waffles. Some of my favourites? The “Coulis de Caramel” and “La Saumon”.

All of their offerings are made from fresh ingredients, and they cook them up in-house right in front of your eyes. Love that!

They also have lactose-free versions for those interested.

2. Coiffeur Vintage

There is tons of information on the worldwide web about the best vintage stores in Paris, and there are probably 10 I could mention off the top of my head besides this one that I frequented. However, Coiffeur Vintage, while smaller than some of the other big players, is packed to the brim with well-curated and relatively inexpensive finds. I have bought many pieces there at unbelievable prices (I’m talking 5-10€ maximum). It does take a little bit of foraging around in bins and stuffed clothing racks to find something you like sometimes, but I’ve always come out with great finds that I still wear to this day.

3. Place des Vosges

Place des Vosges, the original and first planned public square in Paris, is unmissable for those seeking a bit of nature & tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of the 4th arrondissement’s busy Parisian streets.

Given that this square was once the place for French nobility to schmooze in the 17th and 18th century, it’s no wonder that this square offers:

a) Glam architecture

b) Aesthetic terracotta buildings

c) Pleasant foliage

d) Fabulous Fountains

e) All of the above.

Bring a book or a bottle of wine, and enjoy a perfect way to take a Parisian Pause during the day (or night in the summertime)!

4. Maison de Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo’s house is as detailed as his books. From the wallpaper, to artwork, there is much to see packed into the eclectic space.

Although it is quite clear as to the interest an avid fan (such as myself) might have when wanting to view the place in which Hugo wrote many a classic, don’t be fooled into thinking a casual viewer won’t find it interesting.

The place offers a glimpse at 19th century stylings, and may interest any and all who enjoy viewing history in context, rather than in a “formal” museum.

5. Le Voltigeur

This cramped-but-cute café in Le Marais dishes out some great cups of coffee. If you order anything with foam (cappuccino, latte, etc…), be prepared to receive a gorgeous message in chocolate written across your drink. The yellow tables really help brighten up this space just moments away from some great shopping in the 4ème arrondissement. The café also has some options for brunch that are vegetarian friendly, but not much if you’re gluten intolerant.

6. L’as du Fallafel

L’as du Fallafel is well-known to be one of the top spots to pick up excellent falafels in Paris. The hearty stuffed pitas or plates are relatively inexpensive (for Paris), and will definitely keep you full for hours.

Be aware that this Rue de Rosier staple almost always has a line-up for those who want to sit in to dine, but I personally find it worth it! If you don’t want to wait, just order your falafel to-go at their take-out counter next to the shop’s opening.

7. Berthillon Glacier

One of my favourite places to grab ice cream in Paris is without a doubt Berthillon Glacier!

This spot is already very well known as one of the best suppliers and manufacturers of ice creams and sorbets in the French capital, and it shouldn’t be missed for anyone who enjoys a nice frozen treat.

One of my favourites things about Berthillon is it’s location: Île Saint-Louis! In the summertime, it’s incredibly easy to order a takeout cone or cup from their « à emporter » counter and then take a jaunt throughout the small island or along the Seine.
