tsuchi cafe

I admit I am perhaps a bit too obsessed with Tsuchi Café.

This Japanese plant-based bakery and café fooled two of my friends, who honestly thought they used cream or butter in their baked goods. Not true! Tsuchi’s team has just mastered vegan baking. Case in point: their tarts (which are also somehow gluten free?) are decadent, rich, and have multiple textured layers.

On top of their tarts, they also offer an array of gluten free cookies in unique flavours. My absolute favourite is the Hojicha Cookie, but there is also a chocolate cookie, matcha cookies, and icebox cookies.

My only complaint about Tsuchi is that they don’t have any dine-in cutlery or plates (despite offering dine-in seating). While the plates and cutlery are recyclable, I hope this is an oversight they soon rectify.

Overall, this is a personal plant-based favourite of mine, so definitely check it out!

isle of coffee

A coffee shop with an ambiance as unique as it’s name, Isle of Coffee was inspired by Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs. In the words of the owners: “The film encapsulates how we want to share our values about love and the value of community […] It is our vision to use our space as a medium for artistic exchange.”

True to it’s name, this café is a calm and welcoming environment in which to chat, work, or daydream. With photography books, lo-fi beats, cinematography posters, and a perpetual black-and-white movie projected on the wall in the cozy basement space (yes, there is a cozy basement space), this is a terrific coffee shop to add to your list.

The coffee shop also has an impressive array of patisseries on offer (some of the best in the city in my opinion). Along with those, there are, of course, cookies! And there are multiple permanent gluten free cookies available! And there is also a gluten-free and vegan cookie! Woohoo!

I have honestly visited to Isle just to buy their Double Chocolate Cookie. I once went three times in one week for one. Yes, they are that good.

Grab yourself a coffee with a perfectly baked cookie, and thank me later.

craig’s cookies

Craig’s is not celiac-friendly, but it’s a local chain that has added permanent gluten free cookies to their offerings!

Unfortunately, not all of their locations have all of the gluten free cookies available. The one that is most common to spot is the classic chocolate chip cookie. Luckily, this particular treat is soft, comforting, and has the perfect amount of chocolate. While I encourage Craig’s to add more permanent cookie offerings to address their gluten sensitive clientele, I appreciate being included.

In regards to cross-contamination, the person behind the bar the day I went told me that they baked their gluten free cookies before baking their non-gluten free ones. They also use separate pans and utensils, as different tongs for serving. I also appreciate that the location I visited had the cookies stored away from the gluten cookies. This is infuriating when not followed. It’s a small, but important cross-contamination minimizing step!

Gluten free cookies are cooked first thing in the morning before the regular cookies, different tray and utensils etc. Gluten free cookies are stored separately from normal cookies and separate tongs are used.

bunners bakeshop*

Another celiac haven is Bunner’s Bakeshop!

This bakery is both gluten free and vegan, yet you’d never know! There must be some witchcraft going on behind the scenes, because their cakes are somehow too good to be true.

Bunner’s always has a long line-up, but it’s worth the wait. Their treats, as well as their cookies, are always well-made, and have a very satisfying texture. I really enjoy their Creamies, which is their take on an Oreo. There are multiple flavours, and they are all superb.

If cookies are your thing, but you need a cake, might I require one of their cookie-inspired cakes? See examples of ones I’ve ordered below!

mizzica Gelateria & Cafe

Inside the royal blue Gelateria, is a royal welcome to your tastebuds.

What goes better with gelato, than cookies? Mizzica has sourced gluten-free cookie suppliers to ensure that their celiac and gluten friendly fans can enjoy their signature iced treats with a lovely baked good.

Mizzica is a well-awarded gelato shop, so it should come as no surprise that they serve up great gelato. Luckily for vegans, plant-based people, and dairy-free/ lactose-free individuals, they have some refreshing vegan offerings on permanent rotation. If you order gluten free, they even scoop their ice-cream from a separate batch in the back in order to minimize cross-contamination.

Choose from classic gelatos, seasonal sorbets, and dairy-free gelato. You’ll be back - but come early. There’s always a line!

booyah

You’ll be screaming “booyah” when you try some of this place’s signature ice-cream sandiwches!

Made from a perfectly baked cookie hugging perfectly churned ice-cream, Booyah’s desserts are something at which to be marvelled. I actually crave these so badly in the summer.

Booyah caters to a large numbers of consumers with alternative diets: vegan, gluten-free, lower-fat… they’ve got you covered.

Both their vegan and dairy-based ice-cream flavours are well-made, and have interesting flavour combinations. Think honey lavender, German chocolate, taro coconut, and key lime pie. I genuinely find their vegan ice-cream satisfying and close in texture to its counterpart. All of them pair beautifully with their cookies

If you have any dietary restrictions and love cookies, and especially ice-cream sammies, Booyah won’t leave you disappointed!

kupfert & kim*

I became a certified Pilates Instructor at a studio near Yonge & Eglinton, and I am so glad I did it before Kupfert & Kim opened a location there. Otherwise, I think I would have been in severe debt.

This ‘wheatless and meatless’ bakery and healthy food spot makes some of my favourite baked goods in the city. It’s such a joy knowing I can safely order anything I see. It’s truly an exhilarating feeling of which I am not accustomed. I still go quite often, but I tend to switch up my order. As such, I have sampled almost all of their goodies, and I am confident when I say all of them are delicious.

If you’re celiac and crave choice, then Kupfert & Kim is an absolute must. The cookies taste fantastic, and they even have some ‘healthier’ options should you decide to go that route.

bakerbots / bang bang

Bakerbots Bakery, owned by the sister of Bang Bang’s Ice Cream & Bakery’s owner, is also an exceptional spot in which to get ice-cream sandwiches.

Both bakeries offer fantastic customizable ice-cream sandwiches. There are a variety of cookies from which you can choose (with a vegan and gluten-free option!), and many unique ice-cream flavours. London Fog, Matcha, Totaro (ube, also known as purple yam), and Burnt Toffee are just some of the flavours on display.

The bakery’s proximity to Ossington subway station is also a bonus. Overall, Bakerbots is a great place to check out for those who want good quality ice-cream sandwich.

Tori’s Bakeshop

Pleasantly plant-based Tori’s Bakeshop offers an array of baked goods for those with gluten free diets, as well.

This bakery in the east-end is situated inside a very charming green building, and has been serving the neighbourhood (and many, many, many cafés) since 2012.

The treats are always fresh, made from locally sourced ingredients when possible, and have never given me a reaction. Oh! And they’re delicious. What more do you want?
