2023 Top 10 Best International Coffee Roasters

I had the delight of sampling some coffee from different parts of the globe over the past year. Here is my roundup for the coffee roasters you need on your radar in 2023!

Let me know in the comments if there are other roasters worldwide you think should be added to this list!

For more coffee bean suggestions, check out some of the posts below:

STOW COFFEE ROASTERS (SLOVENIA)

Location: Ljubljana, Slovenia

Café: Gosposka ulica 15, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia

I discovered Stow this past summer when I visited the Ljubljana City Museum - and wow. I was not expecting such high-quality coffee while museum-hopping,

Genuinely some of the best beans around, full stop. I picked up three bags before I left, and returned fir multiple pour-overs. The baristas were also very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

Must-try!

ten belles coffee roasters (FRANCE)

Location: Paris, France

Café: 10 Rue de la Grange aux Belle (75010)

Paris has an abundance of cafés worth visiting on both the Left and Right bank. Some of those cafés use their own roasted beans, some don’t.

Ten Belles definitely does, and they’re worth taking home to brew yourself. You can give me the remerciments later!

Coffee Culture Coffee Roasters (chile)

Location: Santiago, Chile

Café: Gral. Ordóñez 199, Maipú, Región Metropolitana, Chile

South America is a powerhouse for producing coffee beans, so it’s only natural that they have some excellent producers.

Coffee Culture Coffee Roasters uses the best of the best, to make the best of the best.

Try, buy, thank me later (in the comments).

vagabond COFFEE roasters (UNITED KINGDOM)

Location: London, UK

Café: 105 Holloway Road, London N7

Vagabond was a heavily frequented coffee shop when I lived in Islington.

This industrial-styled coffee shop is cool, and transparently roasts coffee beans in the back seating area. Vagabond use their roasted products in their caffeinated creations, so you can try before you buy.

Bonus - they offer great nibbles in-house (and they’ve always had a gluten free and a vegan option).

Overall, I’m a fan!

saint-henri Micro-Torréfacteur (canada)

Location: Montréal, QC

Café: 3632 Notre-Dame St W

Café Saint-Henri Micro-Torréfacteur (the French word for ‘micro-roastery’) is an excellent place from which to source coffee beans.

Something I admire about Saint-Henri is their ethical approach to sourcing beans. They make a point to buy from the source (direct trade), and support practices that ensure the pesticide-free and chemical fertilizer-free agriculture.

I have had the pleasure of trying multiple coffee beans from this roastery, and all three were exceptional. My personal favourite was the Oscar et Luis Monge, which were white honey-processed beans from Costa Rica.

They take ‘torréfaction’ très sérieusement, and it shows. All of their beans are well-made, and are processed to showcase a distinctive flavour profile. I highly recommend giving this brand a try!

OGAWA COFFEE ROASTERS (JAPAN)

Location: Kyoto, Japan

Café: 75 Nishikyogoku Kitashozakaicho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 615-0802, Japan

All Ogawa locations make decadent coffee-and-milk based beverages. On top of that, their beans also pack a mighty punch!

Ogawa prides themselves on the top tier level of their products. In their own words, they prioritize “quality over profitability”. The Kyoto founded roastery passionately serve and sell beans which help prove how they’ve successfully expanded internationally.

For unique beans to brew at home, check out Ogawa!

GEORGE HOWELL COFFEE ROASTERS (USA)

Location: Boston, MA

Café: 505 Washington Street / Public Market 100 Hanover Street

George Howell has a lot of experience in the coffee game - over 30 years, in fact! In 1994, after selling all 24 of his "The Coffee Connection" cafés to Starbucks (yes, the Starbucks), George began his roasting journey. With such a colourful resume, it’s no wonder the beans you can pick up from George Howell are consistently fantastic!

The roastery spotlights the beans and the farmers themselves - in-depth information on the process, region, terroir, and people who crafted them can be found on their website. There is a lot of transparency, and the quality of the sourced goods is evident in every bag.

Do yourself a favour, and grab some beans to roast from George Howell. And if you’re able to treat yourself further, get them to roast you a cup, too!

Also note that there is free shipping in throughout the United States of America on orders over $50.00.

MAN VERSUS MACHINE Coffee roasters (GERMANY)

Location: Munich, Germany

Café: Müllerstraße 23, 80469 München, Germany

This Germanic café efficiently makes phenomenal caffeine-based beverages. It was my staple when visiting Munoch.

Their coffee beans are also great, especially on filter. They’re robust, and the design is just super cool. Be a well-oiled machine, and give it a go!

coffee collective (denmark)

Location: Copenhagen, Denmark

Café: Jægersborggade 57, 2200 København, Denmark

Denmark is world-class for coffee shops, so one of their roasters had to make the list.

While it was hard to narrow down, Coffee Collective reigns supreme for me in 2023. They know coffee, and you’d be lucky to get to know them.

origo (romania)

Location: Bucharest, Romania

Location: Strada Lipscani 9, București 050971, Romania

Bucharest has an arresting café - Origo.

This café revolves around the art of coffee-making, and part of that art includes good beans.

I have tried many Origo coffee beans at home, and have always been satisfied. For a surefire hit, give this Romanian Roaster a go!
