Indigo at One Aldwych Restaurant

If I could go to this restaurant at this very moment, I would.

Indigo is one of my favourite - if not THE favourite - restaurants worldwide. The fact the entire establishment is gluten free AND dairy free is mind-blowing. In regards to gluten - it is coeliac safe, as well! As someone who cannot tolerate gluten or lactose, yet still indulges in other animal products, the offerings on the menu are perfectly tailored to my tastebuds and dietary requirements.

The food is inventive, fresh, and flavourful. On the menu, you can find high-quality GF + DF versions of usually wheat-and-dairy filled British classics, such as Fish and Chips and Wellingtons, and more modern fare, such as Grilled Spiced Monkfish and Quail Balotine. I also appreciate the commitment to seasonal and sustainable cooking practices. I've dined here with people who don't avoid gluten and dairy, and they have also adored their meals. They are not excellent for GF/DF items - they are excellent and happen to be GF/DF.

I absolutely need to highlight the homemade bread and dairy-free butter. I dream of it. I ate my roll and the entire butter spread so quickly, that my server brought me over two extra portions. I ate both of them immediately. They're that good! The atmosphere in the space is cozy and intimate, and the service was superb.

Truly a standout restaurant in London, especially for those with particular dietary requirements. A must!

niche

London’s first ever entirely gluten free (and coeliac safe) restaurant is still around for good reason!

This establishment specializes in bringing banging bready British classics to the gluten avoidant crowd. We’re talking wellingtons, pies, and potato cakes. There are also other carb-y classics, like focaccia, fried chicken, and burgers.

I think Niche really standouts when it comes to their main dishes. If you miss hearty favourites, then this is the place to checkout. The food alone is good enough, that even my non-gluten free friends have joined me and enjoyed their meals!

hakata*

Ramen was one of the foods I missed most when I found out I was gluten intolerant (and I found out shortly before my Japanese Shinjuku homestay).

I am always ecstatic when I find a new gluten free ramen option, especially if it’s not vegan! While I think it’s important to cater to multiple dietary needs, there are very few free-from-gluten ramen broths made from animal products. Hakata offers both options, and I’m pleased to report they are equally satisfying!

If you want to hang out with non-gluten free folks, but need to ensure your meal is safe, this restaurant is an excellent option. Bonus - there is a separate GFree menu, and you can also get incredible fried chicken bites!

Favourite Menu Item: Miso Ramen (Vegan or Non-Vegan available)

Location:
177 Bermondsey St, London

los mochis

Japanese meets Mexican in this eclectic and fresh flavour mashup (and of course, it’s entirely coeliac-approved gluten free).

With two locations, Los Mochis is a well-known spot for excellent fusion food. It is rather pricey, but the quality of the ingredients, the way in which they are paired, the setting, the service, and the culinary presentation all justify the cost. The food and interior are standout on their own, so it is an excellent play to bring a flourless OR flourfull friend.

In their own words, it is a “pairing Mexican & Japanese cuisines, showing off the vibrancy, passion, and heat of Mexico whilst celebrating the cool elegance and precision of Japan.” I don’t think I need to say anything else on this!

Favourite Dish: Wagyu Steak Crudo Tostaditos

hobson’s fish and chips*

Late-night fish n chip cravings come about, ok? It’s perfectly normal!

When the cravings hit, I head on over to Hobson’s, as I know there’s a separate deep fryer that will prepare fries, onion rings, and oh-so-crispy fish for my feasting pleasure. The batter is flakey, and most of the items on the menu can be modified to suit gluten free dietary requirements.

If greasiness is something you look for in your late-night bites (I do), then hop on over to Hobsons!

Favourite Dish: Onion Rings (and the fishie n chippies, huh)

Location:
27 St Anne's Ct, London

paladar

Paladar is a celebration of Latin American cuisine in central London!

From the cocktails, the wine lists, and the dishes, everything is carefully curated to show off the best of what those flavours can offer. The best part? The entire menu is 100% gluten free, at no disadvantage to the quality. Given that many of the dishes are naturally free from wheat/barley/rye, it’s a safe and delicious options for any diner.

If you like fresh flavours, lot’s of spice, and the delightful crisp of a tostada, then you need to make a reservation ASAP.

Ma ma boutique bakery

Ma Ma Boutique Bakery is more of a café-style eatery, but there are savoury options sure to satisfy all your coeliac-approved carb cravings.

This entirely gluten free bakery serves up breads, sandwiches, puff pastries, and sweet treats in a welcoming and homely environment. If you’re in the mood for a relaxed coffee with a more casual food option, this is a good choice. I enjoy stopping by with a friend for a precious moment together, or a book for a precious moment alone.

Bonus; Buy a loaf of bread to make food for yourself at home!

Favourite Dish: Spinach and feta pastry

the queens arms*

Look, a Sunday Roast is a must. However, a gluten free Sunday Roast isn’t always available…

… Unless you’re at The Queens Arms!

Deep-fried, gravy drenched, succulent cuts of meat, and crispy potatoes are just some of the items you can get gluten free-ified to itch that scratch. Although British cuisine is often unsafe, the majority of this menu can be safely adapted so you don’t have to feel like you’re left out! There are even multiple gluten free beer options to really complement the aggressively beige and brown food. Best part - there is even gluten free sticky toffee pudding. Yum!

It’s truly lovely to feel included in a pub meal, when oftentimes you have to sit out (or order a sad side salad. no. just no). The servers have always been accommodating and knowledgeable as to coeliac needs!

ALSO there are sometimes unlimited roasties. Really. ‘Nuff said.

Favourite Dish: Onion Rings + Roast Sirloin of Beef Sunday Roast

Location:
11 Warwick Wy, Pimlico, London

utter waffle

I am utterly serious and not waffling around when I say Utter Waffle is a must for brunch.

This entirely gluten free establishment makes both sweet and savoury waffles to please any palate. Whether you’re more waffle-and-fried-chicken, or nutella-and-strawberry, this menu has got it all. The waffles are also stacked high, and drenched in sauce, which make them very social media friendly.

For a fun and satisfying meal that’s not too fussy, Utter Waffle should be added to your list.

Favourite Dish: The G.O.A.T. Waffle

Italian cuisine, safe for coeliacs, with options for normal diners? Sign me up!

The lovechild of a coeliac and non-coeliac owner, this restaurant takes many precautions to ensure all their offerings are safe for all diners. And there are indeed many offerings! Nearly every dish has a gluten free counterpart, including rare sightings like ravioli, lasagna, and tortellini. There are also many vegetarian and vegan options available!

One thing I appreciate immensely, is that Gluten Free items are clearly marked, so there’s no need to worry about a mix-up, or double checking with the waiters as to the safety of a dish.

I genuinely think it’s imperative to pop by for the lasagna, or ravioli. They don’t make me miss gluten at all!

Make sure not to forget dessert!

Favourite Dish: Lasagna
