Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

Genre: Crime, Mystery, Based on a Book

Rating: TV-14

Set in Melbourne in the 1920s, this intriguing murder-mystery show gripes viewers with it’s interesting crimes and gorgeous historically accurate fashion. References to The Great War also make it a hit with history buffs.

This show is an excellent piece of Australian television, and well worth watching - in self-isolation, or out!


Ugly Delicious

Genre: Food, Travel, Documentary

Rating: 17+ TV-MA

Even though you can’t currently leave your house, allow your eyes and mouth to wander the globe with this craving-inducing show.

Renowned chef David Chang leads viewers on a culinary adventure throughout different cities. If this show doesn’t make you hungry, nothing will!


Dirty Money

Genre: True Crime, Documentary

Rating: 17+ TV-MA

Get your true crime kick with this documentary series about corporate corruption, creative accounting, and fraud.

Trick yourself into feeling like you’re learning while cooped up by bingeing real-life financial scandals. From the sketchy dealings of Wells Fargo, to the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist, there is ample content to keep you occupied for many hours.


Fargo

Genre: Crime, Black Comedy

Rating: 17+ TV-MA

People who enjoy crime dramas will love Fargo. Set in the eponymous town, this series follows a crime that occurs. I don’t want to risk spoiling any details, but I will say there is fantastic acting and top-notch writing.

Each season is set in a different era, so it’s an intriguing show to follow!


Jane the Virgin

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Drama

Rating: TV-14

I used to adore telenovelas, and I was very excited when Jane the Virgin came out. This feel good show is the perfect pick-me-up during this stressful pandemic.

Mix-ups, lighthearted situations, and fun romances make this a great show to watch without needing to think too much.


The Spy

Genre: Political, Thriller, Drama, Suspenseful

Rating: 17+ TV-MA

The real life events of Eli Cohen are detailed in this suspenseful and thrilling show. From the colour palette, to the acting and sets, this show has been created with care. You’ll be on the edge of your seat the entire time.

After viewing, you’ll never view Sacha Baron Cohen as simply a comedic actor!


Castlevania

Genre: Horror, Anime, Action, Based on a Game

Rating: 17+ TV-MA

“Cartoons” aren’t just for kids.

Though not strictly anime (it was made by an American studio), this show follows the story Trevor Belmont from the popular video game franchise Castlevania. Violence and vampires combine beautifully to make this a compelling animated show. In fact, I find the animation adds to the charm, as some of the farfetched fantasy aspects look more “natural” in the animated world.

Even if you’re not a fan of the games, this is a surprisingly good show that get’s better which each season.


Roman Empire

Genre: Historical Documentaries

Rating: 17+ TV-MA

I adore historical documentaries (there are few I haven’t seen).

This particular docu-series is the one that I’ve recommended the most to friends, as I find many people are intrigued by the Roman Empire.

Expand your mind as they once expanded their empire with part acted out/ part narrated accounts of the lives of Julius Caesar, Commodus, and Caligula.


Line of Duty

Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller, British

Rating: 17+ TV-MA

Fans of The Bodyguard should give Line of Duty a try.

This police procedural is BBC Two’s most popular drama series, and with good reason. Top-notch acting and lot’s of suspense make this a gripping show for lonely self-isolated nights. You won’t even remember the name of the virus while watching it!


Dark Tourist

Genre: Travel, Adventure, Documentary

Rating: 17+ TV-MA

Delve into the weird and wacky world of “dark tourism” in this informative and captivating docuseries. New Zealand host David brings viewers to places that are only safe to visit from the comfort of their own couch.

A lake formed from a nuclear blast in Kazakhstan, a voodoo festival in Benin, and a forbidden city in Cypress are only some of the arcane landmarks


Love is Blind

Genre: Romance, Reality Show

Rating: 17+ TV-MA

If you’ve heard the hype surrounding the new show Love is Blind, and haven’t began to binge it yet, start immediately!

This addictive dating reality show gripes you from episode 1. Watch people go on dates who never see each other in person. It really makes you rethink the old adage “love is blind”, eh?

It’s so bad, and Yet. So. Good!


Glow Up

Genre: Makeup, Reality Show, Competition, British

Rating: TV-14

Fans of fashion-forward reality shows how have already streamed all of Next in Fashion and Project Runway might enjoy Glow Up!

This British reality show follows numerous contestants vying for a chance to be the next big Makeup Artist. Enjoy seeing wacky looks, fresh beats, and precise cat eyes being done in record time.
